Direct Deliveries of Manufactured Food
The food manufacturer produced daily orders of tinned food which needed transport from their site in Lancashire to a variety of UK supermarket distribution centres. Distribution was entirely by road haulage. Following the introduction of ESOS reporting, management adopted a policy of reducing carbon footprint, and looked for rail freight solutions for UK deliveries to benefit from rail's known low-carbon attributes.
The FreightArranger solution allowed the manufacturer to deliver product daily from the factory to supermarket distribution centres in North-East London, Essex and Kent. FreightArranger provided containers, a collection service to the nearest rail freight terminal, one-way rail transportation, and delivery of the container from the rail terminal in London to the distribution centre. The transit timings allowed daytime manufacture on Day 1, overnight transit, and early morning delivery on Day 2.
The manufacturer saved £20 per full load delivery, 201 lorry miles per load and a massive CO2 saving of 385kgs per load.
